The DIGITAG laboratory
The Digital Agriculture Laboratory (DIGITAG Lab) was established at the beginning of 2018 to operate within the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The DIGITAG Lab is the digital "evolution" of the Insect Genetics and Biosciences laboratory (IGB), which was established in 2001 as a laboratory involved in the molecular study of insects of agricultural interest.
The mission of the DIGITAG Lab is to favour the adoption of digital tools and data-driven approaches in the agricultural practices. In particular, we are currently working to: i. annotate genomes obtained from bacteria of agricultural interest; ii. analyse and map at a chromosomal level genomes of insect of agricultural interest; iii. favour the application of block chains for food traceability to support consumers; iv: study the composition and role of microbiota in insects.
The DIGITAG laboratory is currently collaboratoring with several universities and private companies establishing scientific collaborations and/or research services.
The laboratory, coordinated by Mauro Mandrioli and Gian Carlo Manicardi, is involved in the research doctorate in Agrifood sciences, technologies and biotechnologies and collaborate to the research activity of the Interdepartmental Research Centre for Agri-food Biological Resources Improvement and Valorisation (BIOGEST-SITEIA), a Center of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia acting as a partner for companies in the field of fruit and vegetable for collaborative research projects, services and consulting.
